The economic benefits of developing New Mexico's renewable energy resources are many—more tax revenues, new jobs, increased savings and re-investment in communities.
If New Mexico promoted a new energy economy and developed its renewable energy resources and efficiency technologies, studies show that New Mexico could create more than 15,000 jobs in the next ten years. If we had a program nationally we would create more than three million new jobs in America.
For example, the 200MW Wind Energy Center near the town of House, NM created several hundred construction jobs and will provide $40 million in economic benefits for the surrounding communities over the coming 25 years. There is enough wind in eastern NM to created hundreds of similar wind farms.
By developing high performance buildings and energy savings technologies, New Mexicans also would save money that would be re-invested in their communities—instead of being lost to energy companies. We estimate that if New Mexico utilized building designs and technologies that were 50% more efficient, New Mexicans would save millions of dollars each year.
