Becoming less dependent on foreign sources of energy should be among the West's—and most especially America's—most urgent priorities.
U.S. oil and natural gas production have been in decline since the 1970's and global oil and natural gas reserves are now located in some of the most unstable regions of the world. According to the Cheney Energy Report, two-thirds of the world's oil reserves are located in the Persian Gulf, and half the world's natural gas supplies are in Iran and Central Asia.
Right now the U.S. uses one-fourth of the world's oil while possessing only 3% of its reserves. We now need a national commitment to develop more efficient vehicles and buildings, to deploy new energy sources like biofuels, and harness our vast renewable energy resources such as solar and wind.
New Mexico can help provide the leadership and the resources to help make America energy independent.
